Schools of Sanctuary

On Wednesday the 18th of May 2022 Kilrane National School officially became a School of Sanctuary. A School of Sanctuary is a school that is committed to creating a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment that benefits everybody, especially families seeking sanctuary. Being a School of Sanctuary ensures that we are welcoming to everyone that comes to Kilrane no matter where they are from, their gender, religion or race.

Kilrane NS is now only the 8th school in the Republic of Ireland to have received this status. Our student committee lead this initiative with many great ideas.

Our three main aims as a School of Sanctuary are to:

• Learn - both pupils and staff have learned a great deal about the difficulties that face people who come to Ireland and seek refuge.

• Action - we put our learning into action by having different events throughout the year such as International day.

• Share - finally we share what we have learned with the wider community through social media platforms and also by inviting other schools to come and see our school.
