On behalf of all the staff and myself we welcome you to Kilrane NS and look forward to working with you during your child’s time here.
Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, we are unable to host our introductory Parents Evening but we will organise a date for you and your child to visit the school and meet their new teacher before the school opens again for the new academic year.
Once enrolled, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, our pupils sit in pods of six in their classrooms and they do not mix outside of that pod, apart from break time when they play with children from their own class only. Children sanitise their hands coming in to school in the morning, before they eat, after washroom breaks, trips to the yard or a PE lesson.
I enclose various literature from different agencies to help you with the transition from home to school.
You will see that we use the “Aladdin Connect” App as a means of communication and online payment. Nearer to your child’s start date, we will send you an email with a link to download this App to your mobile device. It is important that you download the App as the school use Aladdin as the main correspondence link to home.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for your co-operation in relation to all the guidelines put in place by the school to date.
We endeavour to make the school as safe a place as possible for your children and the staff. As well as the building being cleaned every day as it normally is, each afternoon after school all door handles and desks are wiped with surface disinfectant and rooms and corridors are sprayed with an aerosol spray fogger each morning before school starts. All classrooms are ventilated either with doors or windows open. As we move into the colder weather we also need the heating on so we aim to find the correct balance to keep the children comfortable – with this in mind it may be worth discussing with your child if they need to wear warmer layers to school.
The children have settled to the new routines and are following all the new timetables. We have hand-sanitising stations inside all our external doors and in all our classrooms. The children are so good at using them, without hesitation.
As you know, from Junior Infants to 2nd class the pupils are divided into pods/groups within their classrooms. Children from 3rd to 6th class sit one metre apart in their classrooms.
We have three separate small breaks in the morning and three separate lunch breaks in the early afternoon. Each class group play with the children from their class and subsequently they have much more space in the yard to move around.
We have perspex screens in place for all our support teachers and their pupils, which enables the children to continue working away as before. Perspex is also in place in the school office and on the teachers desks. Our acknowledgement and thanks go to the school’s Board of Management who purchase PPE for the staff.
We will celebrate Halloween as we always do in Kilrane, except for our walk to Roche Freight and back. We will parade around the yard in our different groups and thoroughly enjoy the day as usual. The KNS Parents Council has purchased a large pumpkin for each classroom this year.
If the school has to close, home schooling should be much more manageable as the children will be able to bring home all their books and belongings in their boxes.

In the meantime I would like to remind everyone that KNS is a nut-free zone. In order to protect children with severe allergies within the school, no nuts, chocolate spreads or other foods containing nuts should be included in your child’s lunch bag.

I hope that this letter finds you all well and that you are coping with the new situation we all find ourselves in.
As you are probably aware the meeting for parents of new children for our 2020 Junior Infant class, scheduled to take place on Thursday 7th May, has to be cancelled. As it looks like social distancing will be with us for some time, it is most unlikely that I will be in a position to reschedule the meeting. The main purpose of the meeting is to give you a sense of what our school is like and in particular how we teach your children. It also gives you a general overview of our ethos and the day to day activities of the school.
The Department of Education will decide when the school will re-open and will provide guidance to us on social distancing within the school setting. With this in mind I would like to inform you that the school has been planning a safe return for the staff and children alike and will be in a position to provide such a return when the time comes.
I will be in touch with you later this Summer with clear guidelines for your child to attend school. This will include a chance for you and your child to visit the school before their official start time. While the restrictions are in place in our school the children will not be asked to wear their uniform. When they are lifted the school will ask the children to wear their uniform once again.

Parents of children from senior infants to 6th class were sent the 2019/2020 booklist today, Tuesday 25th June, via the Aladdin Connect App. The facility to pay online will become available on 1st July and will allow families to make several smaller online payments throughout the next two months.
Parents of children from the incoming junior infant classes will also be sent the booklist on 1st July, along with a password to set up the Aladdin Connect App. (Please refer to your Welcome Pack for full instructions).
Parent/teacher meetings are to take place Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th November.

4th, 5th and 6th class pupils were delighted to receive a visit from one of the Rosslare Harbour customs officers today, 5th April, …. and Defor the dog. The children were delighted to hear about how customs dogs are trained, their working day and their ‘professional’ life. We would like to thank them very much for a very informative visit.
The school celebrated National Autism Awareness Day by holding a special assembly on Tuesday 2nd April. The children signed while singing along to the song ‘This is Me’. They wore blue clothes to school and each child received a special ‘blue nose’. Thank you for the donation of €1 per family, proceeds will be given to our Special Awareness Committee.
Spring cleaning in Kilrane and Rosslare Harbour was uppermost on the agenda in many households last weekend. The clothes collection was very successful and the bags were collected on Wednesday. Once again we would like to thank you all for your support.
Due to the Confirmation of 6th class pupils being held today (21/03/2019) with Bishop Denis Brennan in St. Patrick’s Church, Rosslare Harbour, we will celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Day on Friday 22nd March 2019.
Many educational activities will take place on Friday which outline the inclusive nature of Kilrane National School and the support we all give to our children with additional needs.
Don’t forget that children wear odd socks to school on Friday!
